Central Washington University’s GeoEco Plant is an innovative campus energy facility that uses an open-loop ground-source heat pump system and the Ellensburg Aquifer to provide efficient, low-carbon heating and cooling to campus buildings. The plant will initially serve the new North Academic Complex and is designed with the capacity to support approximately 500,000 square feet of campus facilities as CWU transitions away from fossil-fuel-based heating. Solarc Energy Group assisted the project team during early design, providing energy modeling and analysis in support of the project’s pursuit of International Living Future Institute (ILFI) Zero Carbon Certification. ILFI Zero Carbon Certification is a third-party verified standard that recognizes projects that significantly reduce energy use and embodied carbon while neutralizing operational and embodied carbon emissions through renewable energy and approved carbon-reduction strategies.
